The best weather in Sri Lanka, along the southwest coast, is from November to March. May to August you'll face the potential downpours and rough seas of the southwest monsoon.
Although the sun will often shine for days on end, package holidays and all inclusive holiday deals will certainly be easier and cheaper to obtain. Tides can be dangerous at times, so watch out for red flag warnings on the beaches.

Sri Lanka 's biggest tourist magnet is a golden coastline of almost 300km of glorious beaches and translucent blue ocean. Stretching south from Negombo to Hambantota, it is dotted with attractive holiday resorts ranging from the luxurious, All Inclusive to the low-key. All of them offer a wide range of water activities, be it windsurfing, snorkelling amid superb coral, or deep-sea fishing.

But there are plenty more things to do on your holidays, from visiting turtle farms near Bentota and traditional mask carvers in Ambalangoda to exploring the historic Dutch city of Galle, National Parks with water birds, elephants and crocodiles, ancient cities and Sigirya, soaring high above the jungle, a spectacular citadel from the 5th century AD.

New entry regulations for Holidays in Sri Lanka
From 1st January 2012, all foreign nationals must obtain an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization). The ETA is issued online and no passport copies or photographs are required.
ETAs are only valid for three months from the date of issue so you don't need to apply too early, however, you will need to apply a minimum of 24 hours prior to departure. The cost to obtain an ETA is US$50 for tourists staying up to 30 days. This fee is payable online using Visa, MasterCard or American Express.
