Northern Thailand

They generate an air of warmth and congeniality that pervades the entire city.
Experience an elephant trek or cruise along the Mekong River.

Northern Thailand is one of the most appealing parts of the Far East where Thai tradition and culture come face to face with hospitality and charm.

No visit to Thailand is complete without a visit to the 'Enchanting North'

Chiang Mai - Once the capital city of the Lanna Thai nation, Chiang Mai is now Northern Thailand's most popular arrival point and Thailand's second largest city. Chiang Mai offers some outstanding sights including Phuping Palace, the summer residence of the Thai royal family, many stunning Wats - Wat Phra Singh and Wat Chedi Chet Yot are particularly recommended, the National Museum, Elephant Training Centre and Chiang Mai Tribal Museum.

Chiang Mai is also a great base for tours of the local cottage industries, hill tribes and for those wanting 'soft' adventure for elephant trekking, mountain biking and rafting.

Chiang Rai - Situated beside the Mae Kok River, 114 miles north of Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai is surrounded by stunning scenery. It is home to Karen, Akha and Yao hill tribes, whose traditional costumes and customs remain largely intact. Chiang Rai is a perfect base for visiting the fascinating tribal villages that surround it.

Mae Hong Son - Located on the Thai-Burma border, hidden by tall mountain ranges is the sleepy market town of Mae Hong Sorn. Mae Hong Son is how Chiang Mai used to be - a place where villagers trade wares & vegetables.
The culture and architecture is distinctly influenced by the Burmese.

Many local hill tribes can be found in the area - Shans, Lanna Thais and Karens.
The most popular villages to visit are those which are inhabited by the long neck (Padong) Karen tribeswomen. Mae Hong Son also offers temples, National Parks, caves and some of the most stunning natural beauty Thailand can offer.

Golden Triangle - The notorious point at the confluence of the Mekong and Ruak Rivers once ruled by opium warlords. This is the point where Laos, Burma and Thailand meet. And ideal place to discover the secrets of Akha, Yao, Lisu and Yunnanese hill tribes, trek by elephant or cruise the misty Mekong River.

Shopping
An abundance of local markets can be found all over Northern Thailand selling wood carvings, lacquer ware, stone antiques, handicraft fabrics, Thai silk and gems, usually unique to the area, at bargain prices.
Copy brand clothing can also be found in the larger markets, such as the famous night venue in Chiang Mai, alongside the modern sports, clothes and souvenir stores in the main towns and cities.

Dining & Nightlife
Dining in the North is a treasure trove for gourmets with a wealth of inexpensive restaurants.
Eating away from the comfort of your hotel is an experience and the famous 'Green Curry' is not to be missed.
For the not so adventurous, International restaurants are also plentiful.

Nightlife in the North is more cultured with an array of late markets and classical shows, however a few lively bars can be found in city centres.
